"Macros" is short for macronutrients, of which there are three. Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fat. These are the source of energy for your body, and the amount you take in determines your energy balance.
Protein
Provides the building blocks for your body. It helps to keep you feeling full and rebuilds muscle tissue. Protein can not be stored. There are 4 calories in each gram of protein.
Carbs
Provide glucose, the primary energy source of the body. Your brain and central nervous system run on glucose. They can be stored in the liver or muscle. There are 4 calories per gram of carbohydrate.
Fat
Is essential and a source of energy. It can be stored as body fat for use later. There are 9 calories in each gram of fat.
Indirect Calorimetry measures the metabolic process in the body to determine you daily resting metabolic rate, (your calorie needs at rest). This gives an accurate assessment of RMR compared to the predictive equations used to estimate caloric needs.
